Wonzu Au
문득 아주 엷고 투명한 이음매가 보이곤 한다.
경계와 경계가 맞닿아 태어난 이음매는
그 흔적의 감촉을 느끼기 힘들만큼 매끄러워 보인다.
그 경계를 보는 것으로 때론 무엇인가 태어난다.
세상의 이음매가 때론 시끄럽게 들린다.
눈을 감는다.
낮인데도 별이 떠 있다. 낮이라도 별은 떠 있다.
…결국 모든 것은 셀프 포트레이트가 아닌가, 라는 생각을 한다.
그렇게 안과 밖 그리고 경계면들의 수많은 맞닿음이 하나였음을 생각한다.
그와 동시에 모든 맞닿음은 조금씩 어긋나 있음을 느낀다.
내 작업은 이러한 자화상적 상대성을 바탕으로,
어떤 대상을 설명하거나 재현하기보다
그 어긋남의 흔적으로 드러나는 엷은 경계와 압력을 다루는 것에 가깝다.
완전히 봉합되지 않는 접면과 그 사이,
잠시 드러나는 엥프라맹스(inframince)를 소재로 작업을 이어가고 있다.
At times, I catch sight of a very faint, transparent seam.
A seam born where one boundary meets another
appears so smooth that the texture of its trace is almost impossible to feel.
At times, something comes into being through the act of seeing that boundary.
The seams of the world can sound unbearably loud.
I close my eyes.
Though it is daytime, the stars are there. Even in daylight, the stars remain.
…In the end, I find myself thinking: is not everything a self-portrait?
In that way, I think of the countless points of contact between inside and outside,
and along their boundaries, as having always been one.
At the same time, I sense that every point of contact is ever so slightly misaligned.
Grounded in this self-portrait-like relativity,
my work is less about explaining or representing a subject
than about engaging the faint boundaries and pressures
that emerge as traces of that misalignment.
I continue my work using as its material
surfaces of contact that are never fully sealed,
and the inframince that briefly reveals itself in between.
